Dunedin is mourning the sudden loss of former Mayor Jules Radich, who passed away while serving as a City Councillor.
Mayor Sophie has paid tribute to her predecessor, saying, “I’m shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of former Mayor Jules Radich. Jules was a much appreciated, valued and dedicated member of our Council who I deeply admired for his service to our community.”
Radich was first elected as a Dunedin City Councillor in 2019. He served one term before being elected as the city’s 59th Mayor in 2022. His mayoralty ended in October 2025, after which he returned to Council as an elected Councillor.
During his time as Mayor, Radich became known for his firm commitment to the Southern Hospital project. Under his leadership, the city organised a public protest march, presented a nurses' petition to Parliament, and rallied regional support with the help of ‘Cliff’, the ambulance. These efforts led to the confirmation that all eleven floors of the new inpatient building would be constructed on the former Cadbury site as initially promised.
Mayor Sophie highlighted this work, saying, “The end result – that all eleven floors of the inpatients building are being built on the former Cadbury site as promised – is due in no small measure to Jules’s tireless advocacy.”
Outside of Council, Radich also made significant contributions to community initiatives. He was closely involved with the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, the Dunedin Art Society, and supported Dunedin’s business community.
“Jules’s dedication and love for Dunedin was immense and he always had the city’s best interests at heart. He will be remembered for his many and varied contributions to our city,” Mayor Sophie said.
As Radich was a sitting Councillor, a by-election will be required to fill his seat. Further information is expected next week.
In the meantime, Dunedin’s flags are flying at half-mast to honour a well-respected leader, colleague, and friend. “Our thoughts, deepest love and sympathies are with Jules's family and friends,” the statement concluded.
