In a remarkable feat of skill and endurance, a team of relatively unknown shearers has shattered a world record in Southland, New Zealand, shearing 3236 lambs and surpassing the previous record by 326. This significant achievement was accomplished by the Forde Winders Shearing crew, comprising Trevor Holland, Max Winders, Trent Hewes, Ben Boyle, and Josef Winders.

The record attempt took place at the Grant brothers’ Campbell’s Block in the Hokonui Hills, near Gore, starting at 7 am and concluding at 5 pm. The shearers worked through four two-hour runs, under the supervision of six World Sheep Shearing Record Society referees, with a large support crew and over 100 onlookers. Their combined effort yielded over 3.8 tonnes of wool, adding significantly to New Zealand’s production of this natural fiber.

Each shearer contributed significantly to this record-breaking effort. Trevor Holland sheared 701 lambs, Max Winders 650, Trent Hewes 651, Ben Boyle 630, and Josef Winders 604. Their performances were far above the required average of 727.75 per run, with their first run yielding 816 lambs.

This achievement holds special significance as it is one of the largest tallies in a world record attempt for any number of shearers. The referees, led by Scots official Andy Rankin, ensured all standards were met, including the pre-record wool weigh-in.

The Forde Winders Shearing team, representing a Riverton-based shearing company, included members from various parts of New Zealand. Their success is attributed to rigorous preparation in fitness, nutrition, and strength-building. The event, marked by both joy and sadness due to the recent passing of the cousins’ grandmother, was a testament to their determination and resilience.

This record-breaking event is part of a successful series of record attempts in New Zealand this summer, with the next challenge being the three-stand 8-hours lambs record attempt by the Sutton Shearing crew in Dannevirke. The Forde Winders Shearing team’s accomplishment stands as a significant milestone in the world of competitive shearing, showcasing the extraordinary capabilities and teamwork of these shearers.
