Emergency services confirm two people have been taken to hospital after an early morning fire gutted a one-storey, three-flat building on the corner of Crinan & Conon Streets just before 1.20am this morning.

The fire service received several calls from locals concerned that the occupants were going back inside the burning flat.

Four crews attended the blaze, and the flat’s two occupants were accounted for at the scene, a fire service spokesman said.

One person was taken to hospital by ambulance, and the other by police, he said.

A St John spokesman confirmed one person suffering minor smoke inhalation was taken to Southland Base Hospital.

Police were unable to give an update on the second person.
