Great South is holding two free one-day information sessions in Te Anau this month for those wanting work in hospitality and tourism over the summer.
The sessions, where local hospitality and tourism businesses will talk about the kind of work they do and the skills required, will be held at the Distinction Hotel & Villas on 8 and 9 December.
Great South Fiordland Employment and Resource Planner Glyn Saunders said it was a great opportunity for people to find out what’s involved directly from employers and in an informal setting.
“Businesses will be quite honest and open about the kind of attributes they’re looking for in staff.
“It’s a way for people to get a feel for whether this is the kind of work they would like to do without having to commit,” Mr Saunders said.
Business owners would talk in the morning and in the afternoon, three local businesses would take people behind the scenes of their workplaces.
“Most people have never actually seen what’s involved in cleaning a hotel room, or set foot in a commercial kitchen,” Mr Saunders said.
The businesses represented at the sessions include food and beverage, accommodation and tourism operators.
Ministry of Social Development work brokers will also be present on the day to provide information on products and services available to help both employers and jobseekers.
While there was no guarantee of work as a result of attending, it was a good way to make yourself known to employers, Mr Saunders said.
“No one is sure just how busy the summer will be, but these sessions will assist people to be more successful in applying for jobs should they become available.”
Attendance either day is free and a light lunch will be provided.
The sessions follow on from recent careers and employment skills workshops also held in Te Anau.
