It’s United Video South City Invercargill’s last week in business after 39 years.
Owners Daryle and Kim Blackler expect to have a big week selling off the last of their stock, and estimate to have owned well over 100,000 DVDs.
The first to go when the big sale started several months ago was the box sets of old television shows, and this week will be the last of the popular movies.
The South City franchise was the only megastore in New Zealand and once upon a time the couple also owned two Dunedin stores and another in Queenstown.
The movies all eventually ended up in Invercargill where United Video had the biggest library in Australasia.
“There were more DVD’s in containers than we realised,” he said.
Daryle said he wasn’t sad about closing the doors, “we’ve had a few months to get used to it,” and it’s not like this was the businessman’s last venture.
This week:
United Video closed its Dunedin store in 2018 and the one in Morrinsville will be the last remaining franchise store left in the country.
There is another United Video in Masterton that combines with a clothing store and continues to rent a small number of films.
Doors close 7pm on Saturday, 12th August.
