More than 50 skaters from Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch, Queenstown and Alexandra entered the Ice Sports Southland figure skating championships at the weekend.

Executive committee member Melissa Cummings said following a six month closure for a well overdue ground thaw and maintenance, the team of volunteers spent countless hours upgrading the rink and relaying the surface.

“We have upgraded the interior of the ice rink, with a new paint job, and a re-developed members room upstairs, as well as a new office/music room, and laying a fresh sheet of ice-layer upon layer. It is quite a process.”

Mia Cotton, of Queenstown in the Intermediate Novice Under 12.

The skating champs included a wide range of competitors, including several young skaters giving competition a go for the very first time, and right through to those competing at national level.

The Gore-based club also has a new coach this year – Corina Ormston, who moved over from Brisbane to take up the coaching role.

The next competition on the figure skating calendar for 2023 is the Alexandra Ice Skating championships, and Gore will also be hosting the Otago Southland champs in July.
