A tragic crash on the Winton Lorneville Highway on Tuesday, 21 January, has claimed the life of one person. Police confirmed that the individual passed away in hospital yesterday due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Two people were initially transported to hospital in critical condition, and one of them remains in a critical state. Police expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the incident. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, and the Serious Crash Unit is involved.
The accident occurred around 5:40 pm near Thomsons Crossing on State Highway 6. It involved two vehicles and resulted in significant injuries to six people. Emergency services mounted a large-scale response, with St John dispatching three helicopters, five ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and two managers to the scene. Fire crews from Winton and Kingswell also assisted, extricating one person trapped in a vehicle.
Of the injured, two individuals were critically hurt and transported to hospital, including one who was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a stable but critical condition. Three others with serious injuries were taken to Kew Hospital by ambulance.
Police have appealed to the public for assistance with their inquiries. They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who witnessed the crash, its lead-up, or its aftermath.
