Southland Area Commander Mike Bowman says one person has died following a single-vehicle crash in Invercargill early this morning, after an earlier interaction with Police. Related: Southland Roads Closed After Overnight Crashes

Shortly before 3am, Police signalled for a vehicle to stop on Kelvin Street. The driver failed to stop and fled the area. The vehicle was not pursued by officers.

A short time later, the vehicle was found after it had crashed at the intersection of Leet and Kelvin Streets. Emergency services attended, but one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area was reopened later Sunday afternoon and traffic lights at the Gala and Kelvin streets intersection were not working while new lights were installed. The case will also be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, which is standard procedure when there has been prior Police involvement.

Police are asking for assistance from the public as investigations continue. Anyone who witnessed the crash or was in the surrounding area at the time is encouraged to come forward.

In particular, Police are seeking CCTV or dashcam footage from Wellesley Avenue, Avenal Street, and Kelvin Street during the early hours of the morning.
