A person has died following a single vehicle crash in Invercargill in the early hours of the morning, prompting an ongoing Police investigation.

Police signalled for a vehicle to stop on Kelvin Street shortly before 3am. The driver did not stop and fled the area. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was found crashed at the intersection of Leet Street and Kelvin Street. Emergency services attended the scene, where one person was pronounced dead. Related: Southland Roads Closed After Overnight Crashes

The Serious Crash Unit has been deployed and is examining the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police have confirmed that the matter will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, which is standard procedure in situations where a vehicle has failed to stop for Police prior to a fatal incident.

Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle before the incident is urged to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from people who may have been in or around Wellesley Avenue, Avenal Street, or Kelvin Street at the time.

Police are also seeking any CCTV or dashcam footage that could help establish the events leading up to the crash. This information may be crucial in building a clearer picture of what occurred.
