HEAVY RAIN EASING OVER THE UPPER SOUTH ISLAND THIS AFTERNOON AND THE NORTH ISLAND THIS EVENING. SEVERE NORTHWEST GALES ABOUT CENTRAL NEW ZEALAND EASING BY EVENING. WESTERLY GALES ABOUT COASTAL SOUTHLAND AND CLUTHA.

An active front and band of heavy rain currently crossing the South Island’s West Coast should move onto the North Island this afternoon and clear away to the east overnight.

COASTAL PARTS OF SOUTHLAND AND CLUTHA: Westerly gales are expected about Foveaux Strait today and again on Saturday night and could become SEVERE in exposed places during these times.

People in these areas are advised to keep up to date with forecasts in case parts of this WATCH are upgraded to a WARNING.
