The Thornbury Vintage Tractor & Implement Club has opened its Rural Heritage Centre to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore Southland’s rich agricultural history. The centre features the popular Southland Farming History exhibit, showcasing an impressive collection of machinery, trucks, and other farm equipment that highlight the evolution of farming in the region.
One of the centre’s main attractions is the Steam Shed, which houses a rare 118hp superheated Garrett Steam Engine. This steam engine is one of only three left in the world and is the only one that is still operational. The Steam Shed and other displays at the centre celebrate the achievements and developments that shaped Southland’s farming heritage.
The Rural Heritage Centre is open every Sunday and on public holidays from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Admission costs $10 for adults, and entry is free for visitors under 16.
For those interested in exploring the exhibits further, a video tour is also available, offering an in-depth look at the facility and its historical collections. Conveniently located in Thornbury and well signposted along State Highway 99, the centre is easily accessible for visitors looking to delve into Southland’s rural past.
