Popeyes Louisiana Chicken is heading to Invercargill, with its first South Island store set to open in the coming months. The popular US fried chicken chain, known for its bold Louisiana flavours, will launch the new store on Dee Street on the former JJ’s Ltd site, opposite KFC.
A company spokeswoman said, "Looks like the secret is out! Fried chicken lovers in Invercargill will soon get their first taste of Popeyes, with our new store set to open on Dee Street. While the official opening date is yet to be confirmed, one thing is certain – our most iconic menu items, including the famous Chicken Sandwich, Tenders, Chicken Nuggets, Mash & Cajun Gravy and Signature Louisiana Chicken will be on the menu and ready for locals to enjoy very soon. Watch this space."
This will be the tenth Popeyes in New Zealand at time of opening, adding to the six stores currently operating and three more planned to be opened across the North Island over the coming months. The expansion reflects the growing demand for the brand’s signature Louisiana-style offerings.
Popeyes is operated in New Zealand by Tahua Partners, which holds the local master franchise. Based in Auckland, Tahua Partners also runs major food and retail brands such as Burger King, Starbucks, Resonate, Hannah’s Shoes and Number One Shoes. In 2023, the company also acquired outdoor goods retailer Torpedo7 from The Warehouse Group, further strengthening its position in the New Zealand market.
The new Invercargill store highlights Popeyes' plans to expand across the country and bring more of its iconic menu to Kiwi customers. With strong local interest and a growing following, the brand’s southern move is expected to be well received.
