Exciting New Initiatives For YES Students

Two new business initiatives have come out of Southland Boys High School as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).
Champ Thiagarajan and Lethan Pickett are currently working on an online art gallery called NzArtsy, that sells and purchases local New Zealand artwork from behind the screen.
The students are also both art students themselves and understand the struggle of having to sell work in New Zealand.
“Without much exposure, our work is only circulated between a small community. But through NzArtsy, emerging artists like ourselves will have the same platform as professionals, allowing the rarely seen side of New Zealand art to be displayed.”
The website should be live in the next month and another bonus was that the artist doesn’t have to worry about the troubles of travelling to galleries to sort out purchases.
SBHS student Aubrey Page is another budding entrepreneur who has started his brand Eco Smile – an alternative to toothpaste that is handy to use in the outdoors.
The Year 12 student came up with the idea of a toothpaste table while on a tramping trip earlier this year. He’s also an avid cyclist and loves every opportunity to get into the outdoors.
“I wanted to create a product that was dedicated to the things I love doing.”
Less is more when it comes to brushing your teeth on the go, and also there is no mess to clean up. The tablets are non-abrasive with no preservatives, binding agents, plastics and aluminium.
They are also vegan-friendly and gluten-free and contain micro-sized plant cellulose fibres, sourced from spruce trees, combined with menthol and clove oil to thoroughly polish your teeth naturally.
