UPDATE: 7pm Moray Place, Dunedin cordons stood down.
The suspicious package at Moray Place, Dunedin has been rendered safe and there was found to be no threat.
All cordons have been stood down.
Inspector Jason Guthrie, Area Commander Otago Coastal said Police were notified of a suspicious package near a vacant building on Moray Place earlier this afternoon.
Police treat incidents like this seriously and in response the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad from the New Zealand Defence Force were called in.
A short time ago the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad detonated the package and it was found to be inert.
Police will now launch an investigation into the origins of the package.
Police understand the cordons and evacuations have been an inconvenience for a large number of people and their patience and co-operation is appreciated.
UPDATE: Evacuations in Moray Place, Dunedin
Police are continuing to maintain a presence at the intersection of Moray Place and Great King Street in response to a suspicious package.
As part of the response the Christchurch based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad from the New Zealand Defence Force have been called in.
Buildings in and around the intersection of Moray Place and Great King Street have been evacuated and cordons are in place.
If members of the public have any concerns or wish to ask any questions they can visit the Glenroy Auditorium on Harrop Street where Police will be on site.
Dunedin Police are investigating reports of a suspicious package at a commercial premises at the intersection of Moray Place and Great King Street, Dunedin.
As a precaution Police are establishing cordons in and around the intersection and evacuating nearby buildings.
Members of the public are asked to avoid the area while enquiries are ongoing.
