ESK Street from Dee to Kelvin Sts will be closed to traffic and open to shoppers and food lovers for the City Centre Esk Street Christmas Market this Saturday, December 5, from 10am to 3pm.
Centred in Esk St will be a dedicated food court, complete with table and chairs for diners – a dream finally realised for What’s On Invers manager Mike Sanford.
“I have always wanted to incorporate a food court in Esk St and this one complements the existing food shops. It’s never been done and it will be a real drawcard for shoppers and food lovers alike,” he said.
Sass Cafe and Southern Fare would offer typical Kiwi cuisine while international food offerings included Turkish, Indian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, with more still to be confirmed, he said.
Mr Sanford said entertainers would make use of the raised grass stage area created as part of the completed redevelopments on Esk St.

Among the entertainers will be two Southland bands, D&M Duo, featuring Michelle Lange and Daniel Monteath, and Into The East, featuring Liv McBride who will each entertain bargain hunters and food buyers throughout the day.
Also located on Esk St will be a dedicated children’s area complete with a bouncy castle and water orbs for their entertainment.
Retailers bargain and sale racks would line the streets.
Another fixture of the event will be the stalls and shopping inside Cambridge Place Arcade from Esk to Tay Sts. There will be more than 16 stallholders offering a range of products and services from massage to crafts – each hand-picked to complement the existing businesses within the arcade, Mr Sanford said.
This is the third year Mr Sanford had run the City Centre Esk Street Mall Christmas Market, which was funded by the Invercargill City Council. He said the popularity of last year’s market prompted the closing of Esk St for this year’s event, which he hoped would be the “best yet”.
