Invercargill City Council has confirmed that Fulton Hogan has been awarded the contract for the Esk Street Mall upgrade and will begin the project on January 13, 2015. Emails and letters were sent to retailers today advising them that the first stage of the CBD upgrade will start next month, and will take approximately four months to finish. Work on-site is to be conducted between 7am and 7pm, with some components to be undertaken at night to minimise disruption.
The upgrade work will begin at the Dee Street end, progressing towards Cambridge Place Arcade. The worksite will be cordoned off to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Roading Manager Russell Pearson said motorists will still have access to Esk Street and at this stage of the project little disruption to parking is expected.
“I urge drivers to travel a little slower and be watchful for pedestrians and workers. There will be minimal activity by the contractor on the footpath areas and the contractor will be working to provide access to the shops and making the footpaths safe for pedestrians.”
Fulton Hogan will set up a site office at Shop 9, Cambridge Place Arcade from January 21 if retailers wish to discuss any issues with them.
Esk Street Mall was host to the very successful Christmas Market Day and plans are already in motion for a Grand re launch of Esk Street Mall after the upgrade is complete.
