Emergency services rushed to Elles Road in Invercargill after a severe vehicle collision that occurred shortly after 3:30 PM on Monday. The crash site, located between SH 1/Tay Street and Tweed Street near Thomson Park, prompted Police to close the road as they attended to the critically injured parties. One individual sustained serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle and was urgently transported to Kew Hospital for treatment. To manage the situation, emergency response teams, including an ambulance, a rapid response unit, and a scene manager, were dispatched to provide immediate medical assistance.
Firefighters from the Kingswell and Invercargill stations also arrived at the scene to assist with traffic control, ensuring the safety of both the responders and the public. The accident occurred near train tracks, leading to temporary suspension of rail services as KiwiRail was asked to hold all trains to secure the area.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the vicinity of Elles Road and expect significant delays. Traffic diversions are in place to facilitate the flow around the emergency zone, and the public is urged to seek alternative routes until the road is reopened.
