The Emergency Mobile Alert should appear automatically on your phone’s screen with a unique and penetrating warning sound. As Emergency Mobile Alerts are about keeping you safe, you won’t be able to opt-out of receiving Emergency Mobile Alert.
The nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert system is happening tonight between 6 and 7pm, 26 Nov 17.
It is expected around one third of phones will initially be able to receive the alerts. This number is expected to rise substantially over time as people replace their phones with newer models. You can see which phones are compatible here: https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/get-ready/civil-defence-emergency-management-alerts-and-warnings/emergency-mobile-alert/emergency-mobile-alert-capable-devices/
You do not have to do anything if you have received an alert. In the future, this is how we may provide you with warnings if you or your property are at risk of harm. If you have not received an alert, your phone may be still be being configured by your telecommunications company and may be enabled in the future. Older phones may need to be replaced.
Even with this warning system, remember the warning signs and be proactive. LONG OR STRONG GET GONE.
