Last night, a group of five young men found themselves stranded after losing their way on the Makarewa Falls track in the Hokonui Hills, Southland. The group, all in their late teens, had been caught off guard by the diminishing light while on their evening walk.
As darkness fell, they wisely used the SOS function on their cellphone to alert the authorities and managed to light a fire, aiding their rescue.
A coordinated effort ensued as ten Southland Land Search and Rescue volunteers, supported by the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (AREC), quickly mobilized. The rescue team successfully located the young men shortly after midnight, navigating through challenging conditions.
Despite the adverse weather, the group was safely escorted back to the car park by 2 am, all in good health. The successful rescue was made possible by the swift actions of the group in signaling for help and the tireless work of the volunteers.
They are also cautioning outdoor enthusiasts to properly prepare and remain alert to changing conditions. As daylight saving time has ended, the shorter days significantly increase the risk of being outdoors after dark.
What may start as a day walk could turn into an overnight trip faster than you might realise if you lose sight of the track.
It’s essential to be prepared before you set out on your walk, some good tips before you think about heading:
• Before you go let family and/or friends know where you’re going, and when to expect you back.
• Have an emergency locator beacon, these can be purchased from outdoor stores or hired from your closest DOC centre.
• Take weather forecasts seriously and wear the correct clothing.
• Have enough food and water should you have to spend extra time outdoors.
Remember, it’s never too early to turn back!
