Don’t be a Tosser

Who hates rubbish and litter bugs?
Well Natalia Waaka Third Year SIT Bachelor of Applied Media Art Student, currently researching how,
‘Socially Engaged Art Practice can create Social Awareness that there is a Litter Problem here in Invercargill.’

My first project photographed was based on Victoria’s, Australia’s, Litter Prevention Policy ‘Don’t be a Tosser, Put it in the bin.’

Natalia has been pushing her trolley cart around the streets of Invercargill, collecting rubbish that is dispersed along the footpaths and side parks within Invercargill’s littered streets.

“My project is not about me going around picking up other peoples litter, but I will be inspiring, informing and educating the public on their responsibility as a consumer to correctly dispose of their rubbish.”

Part of engaging the public sense of ‘are they on board campaign’, is that she will be handing out badges. These badges will state ‘Don’t be a Tosser, Put it in the bin, Follow on Facebook’, to help engage, inform and inspire the public views about what they think and feel about this problem.

The rubbish collected along Natalia’s campaign will be utilized as part of her art medium to create a stimulating sculpture focused on the consumer’s consumption of by-product packaging.

This sculpture, titled ‘Litterally Unaware’, was constructed from litter that was collected from designated footpaths and side parks within Invercargill.

Second phase of my research art project is planning a One Day Clean Up in Invercargill incorporated with Keep NZ Beautiful Week from 15-20 Sept.

I am currently fundraising to attend the KNZB Conference in Wellington on Sept 5,6 and 7th of Sept.
