The Diwali Festival of Lights, an Indian New Celebration held at Stadium Southland in October, has been labelled a ‘huge success’ by members of Indian Community Southland (ICS) Inc.

Thousands of people attended the festival to both be a part of a significant occasion and learn about Indian culture and communities. ICS Chair Vikas Sharma has been blown away by the festival’s popularity.

“This year’s Diwali celebration at Stadium Southland…was a huge success. The event was greatly appreciated by the public,” he says.

According to Vikas, many people had intended to visit for a few hours but ended up staying the entire day. Others loved the cultural performances and were pleased to see the Indian community growing and bringing cultural events with them.

The Diwali Festival of Lights was also attended by Invercargill mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt, National Party MP Sarah Dowie, ICC councillors, and Labour Party MP Liz Craig.

“The time and efforts put in by the ICS committee members was huge to make this event a big success. I appreciate time and efforts put in by our performers, hosts, and the volunteers. At last, we can’t forget the support we received from our sponsor, as without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”
