The Southern Smash South Island Disc Golf Championships will be held in Queens Park this weekend, even under the Red Light setting.

This is a marquee event on the New Zealand tour and some of the country’s best players will descend on Invercargill for an epic weekend.

Disc Golf South Invercargill committee member Zara McLeod said there were privileged to be able to use the Queens Park golf course as its venue.

“Red light settings have hindered the event but only slightly, being an outdoor event and a golf course we are able to safely have less than 100 players on the course at a time, meaning we can run a safe and smooth tournament.

“The tournament cannot run without the help of local businesses and sponsors and we are always grateful for the support we receive.”

The main course in Queens Park will be shut for the weekend to allow the players to flow freely through the course without being in close proximity to the public in the Red Light setting.

“ We will be maintaining social distance practices and mask wearing practices to ensure the safety and integrity of the event.”

The Southern Smash has been running annually for the past four years and sets a benchmark for tournament standards in New Zealand.

“From having international companies sponsoring the event to just good ol’ southern hospitality, we really enjoy hosting tournaments and look forward to seeing the quality of golf NZ has to offer.”

Invercargill local Sheree Williams is looking forward to trying out the game, after being introduced to the game through Zara.

“I was looking for a new hobby and having a busy life I decided I need to get out there and have some fresh air.”

Zara said the club was predominately males and they were hoping to promote a few more females to even things up.

“We’d love for more girls to get involved.”
