Deputy Mayor Nobby Clark has gained the support he needs from four other councillors to file another Notice of Motion pushing for council to join the ‘Communities 4 Local Democracy’ breakaway group.
The group is in opposition to the proposed 3 Waters reform and already made up of 31 other councils around the country – predominately north of the Waitaki.
The Infrastructural Services Committee will vote on the motion at its next meeting on July 5 – for the second time, after the first motion was lost 9-6.
Nigel Skelt, Graham Lewis, Ian Pottinger and Allan Arnold have all put their names towards the motion, following the Groundswell meeting and protest rally over the past few weeks.
Nobby said he wouldn’t be calling for a public meeting to hear community concerns, however, because he was already aware of the views of those who attended the Groundswell meeting (600 attended), as well as 700 online comments as well.
A letter from the ICC to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahutu on September 28, 2021 clearly outlined its concerns, and Nobby believes the pressure for council to do anymore should be target towards Labour MPs, and in particular List MPs, such as Dr Liz Craig.
