Awarua Synergy has completed one of its most challenging operations to date — a two-week insulation deployment across the Chatham Islands and Pitt Island that pushed logistics, endurance, and teamwork to the absolute limit. While the Deep South is known for its rugged conditions, the Chatham’s proved to be “nextlevel tough.” Team members described the experience as “like climbing Mount Everest,” with several saying it was the hardest job of their entire working careers.
This transformative initiative was made possible through the careful planning and strategic investment of the New Zealand Government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme, administered by EECA – the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. The programme prioritises low-income households, ensuring equitable access to warmer, healthier homes. The Chatham Islands deployment reflects the Government’s foresight and commitment to reaching even the most geographically isolated whānau.
Despite extreme weather, cancelled flights, freight delays, and some of the most complex home environments in the country, the Awarua Synergy team successfully insulated more than 70 homes, delivered community education workshops, and made a lasting impact on one of New Zealand’s most remote regions. The work demanded not only physical resilience but a delicate, highly skilled level of excellence — from navigating fragile structures to adapting installation techniques for homes built with unique materials and layouts. Every decision required precision, care, and technical mastery.

Two cancelled flights disrupted already tight schedules, food supplies failed to arrive in the first week, and freight delays forced constant adaptation. Some homes were located in hard-to-reach areas, requiring 4x4 capability and careful navigation across rugged terrain. Installers encountered everything from tight underfloors to wildlife surprises, including wekas boldly exploring work areas.
“Every single day demanded problem-solving, technical skill, and sheer determination,” said Sumaria Beaton – Sikisini, Awarua Synergy’s GM. “The team had to recalibrate constantly to get the job done safely and to a high standard.”
Heavy rain, strong winds, and rapidly changing conditions added to the pressure. Reaching Pitt Island required a rough boat crossing, followed by work in one of the most isolated communities in the world. When the job was complete, the challenges continued, with the team spending an extra day and a half stranded due to cancelled flights — exhausted but proud.
The crew stayed at Kōpainga Marae, sharing meals, stories, and the same sleeping quarters. Long days were followed by evenings of camaraderie, humour, and shared resilience.
“What could have broken a team instead forged one,” said Sumaria Beaton – Sikisini, Awarua Synergy’s GM. “They supported each other, kept morale high, and delivered exceptional work under conditions most people will never experience.”

Local hospitality played a crucial role in the project’s success. Residents provided guidance, transport, food, and encouragement throughout the deployment. Homeowner feedback was overwhelmingly positive, praising the team’s professionalism, friendliness, communication, and the immediate warmth felt in homes after installation. Comments included:
“We can’t speak highly enough of you all. Our house feels so much warmer.”
“A huge feat to organise everything and cope with the logistics. I say 12/10 to all of you — from the whole island.”
The project delivered over 70 insulated homes, improved warmth and health outcomes, strengthened community relationships, and provided education workshops that will benefit households for years to come.

“This wasn’t just an insulation trip,” said the GM. “It was a commitment to dignity, wellbeing, and community. The rugged Chathams asked everything of us — and our team delivered through sheer determination, grit, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Warmer Kiwi Homes, administered by EECA, continues to support healthier, warmer living environments across New Zealand. Its investment in the Chatham Islands demonstrates a commitment to ensuring even the most remote communities can access essential home improvements.
Awarua Synergy remains dedicated to delivering high-quality energy efficiency solutions across Southland, with a focus on warmer, drier, healthier homes and community-centred programmes that reduce energy hardship.
