Fifteen–year old Invercargill driver, Alex Crosbie, has maintained his impressive form following up his third place finish in the 2021/2022 South Island Formula 1600 Championship with a great start to the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship at Taupo Motorsport Park last weekend.
Crosbie, who secured third in the South Island Championship at his home circuit Teretonga Park a week ago in his Ray GR21, travelled to Taupo to contest the first of two rounds which will determine the New Zealand Championship and made an impressive start at a circuit he had never raced at before. Crosbie had only a short time to get to grips with the Taupo layout but adapted quickly to race to four third placings across the four races over the weekend. He left Taupo sitting third overall in the championship and second in Class 1. He now heads to the second round, due to be held in much more familiar territory, Mike Pero Motorsport Park at Ruapuna in Christchurch, on 1 May.
Alex, a Year 11 student at Southland Boys High School, admitted before he left for the New Zealand Championship round that it would be a baptism of fire as he had never driven at the circuit with his first laps coming during Friday testing. However he overcame that disadvantage to put together strong results in a field that brought the best of North and South Island drivers together for the event.
Crosbie has a varied motorsport background having successfully competed in karts, taking a third place at the Nationals and a second at the National Schools Kartsport Championship while also competing across the Tasman in the past. He also competes in speedway, recently winning the Pits Media Trophy with six wins, two seconds and a third placing after rounds at Invercargill, Dunedin and Cromwell. He has also had the occasional saloon car outings at Teretonga Park.
