Man Arrested After Invercargill Police Pursuit
Police have arrested a man after a vehicle fled during a routine traffic interaction in Invercargill on Tuesday evening. The incident began around 5pm, when officers approached a man to speak with him about a driving matter. The driver sped off, prompting police to initiate a pursuit. Southland Area Commander

Update 10:30pm: State Highway 6/Winton-Lorneville Highway near Lochiel, north of Invercargill, has reopened.

A crash has closed a section of State Highway 6 near Lochiel, affecting traffic between Wilsons Crossing Road and Lochiel-Branxholme Road.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency confirmed the closure, advising motorists to avoid the area or delay their journey where possible. “Due to a crash, State Highway 6 is closed between Wilsons Crossing Road and Lochiel-Branxholme Road. Road users are advised to avoid the area or delay your journey if possible,” said a spokesperson.

A detour is in place and is suitable for all vehicles. Northbound drivers should turn left onto Wilsons Crossing Road, then right onto Lochiel-Branxholme Road, and right again onto Lochiel Bridge Road before rejoining SH6. Southbound traffic should reverse this route.

Authorities are urging caution and patience while the road remains closed, and they will provide updates as the situation develops.
