A crash on State Highway 1 near Waikouaiti has blocked the road, causing traffic disruptions in the Southland and Otago region.

State Highway One has RE-OPENED though Waikouaiti township, with stop/go traffic management in place while vehicle recovery operations take place. Expect delays through the area and allow additional time for travel.

State Highway One is now CLOSED at Waikouaiti township this morning, approximately 36km north of Dunedin. Closure points are in place between McGrath Rd and Ramrock Rd.
Follow directions given by traffic controllers on-site.Detour: Traffic is being diverted onto McGrath Road to the south, and Ramrock Road to the north, for light vehicles only. Road users should expect delays and should avoid the area or delay their journeys if they can.
Police were called to the scene at 10.20am after two vehicles collided on the bridge crossing the Waikouaiti River. One of the vehicles involved was towing a caravan.
A Police spokesperson said, "State Highway 1 (Waikouaiti-Waitati Road) in Otago is blocked following a crash."
"Diversions are being put in place," Police said, as efforts are made to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.
Motorists travelling through the area are advised to expect delays and follow the diversion signs.
No details have yet been released about injuries or the cause of the crash.
