Waitomo is extending its reach into Invercargill as part of its rapid national expansion, with plans to open new Fuel Stops this September. Greta Shirley, Group Manager – Customer Experience at Waitomo Group, shared the company’s excitement about moving into Southland. “We’re stoked to be heading to Southland. We know Waitomo’s not well-known as a brand down there, but we promise to deliver the goods,” she said.
This move comes just over a year after BP closed the BP Highway petrol station on Dee Street in June, leaving a gap in the local fuel market. Waitomo aims to fill this gap by providing residents with accessible and affordable fueling options.
Waitomo will lease and operate two unmanned Fuel Stops in Invercargill, maintaining the adjacent shops open. The transition begins in August, with the aim to start serving customers by September. Shirley emphasized the celebratory nature of Waitomo’s site openings, stating, “Whenever we open, we have a good celebration on site with lots of goodies to give away and customers will get to meet the Waitomo team.”
These unmanned sites feature outdoor payment terminals and the popular Waitomo app, which offers a “spin to win Moolah” promotion for transactions over $20. “Once you try it, customers will love the ‘appiness it brings,” Shirley noted.
Invercargill residents can look forward to the competitive pricing Waitomo is known for. Shirley highlighted the local economic benefits, saying, “As Kiwis fueling Kiwis, every dollar stays in New Zealand and is reinvested so we can deliver competition and choice to even more Kiwi customers.”
Waitomo currently operates over 95 sites across New Zealand, including in Gore, Timaru, Dunedin, and Christchurch, with further expansion planned. “Building out our South Island network is a priority for us, and we expect more to open before the end of the year,” Shirley confirmed.
Founded in 1947 in Te Kuiti, Waitomo remains a 100-percent Kiwi, family-owned business. “We’re a disruptor and we enjoy shaking things up. Customers can expect us to do the same in Invercargill, bringing the competition that is needed to keep prices sharp in the future as well,” Shirley stated.
