Community is the theme of this year’s 151 st Southland A&P Show, with a new community stage set to be the major attraction. Renowned for a day where country comes to town, a focus of this year’s committee has been involving the local community.

Southland A & P show president Paula Bell says A&P Shows are a great way to bring country to town and some of the sections, such as the pet section, provide the perfect opportunity for children to interact with farm animals they might not otherwise see.

“The community stage this year means groups, organisations and schools which are performing will also have the chance to see what other amazing aspects our A&P Show has.” “Our committee has worked tirelessly to bring a vast array of entertainment from all over Southland together for one day at the Southland A&P Show.”

“The Hayes family along with Holly Muirhead and Taylah Ward will be the main attractions on our main stage, with the community stage running alongside it.”

New this year we also have a Partner Carry Race with awesome prizes, a revitalised Scarecrow competition and an Agrikids competition.” Other attractions to this year’s show will be the usual favourites, including the cattle section which is back for 2019 with on-farm judging, celebrating their 150th show.

Prior to Saturday’s show, cattle have been judged on-farm with the presentation of trophies set for show day at 1pm in the cattle marquee. There will also be a junior handler competition at the Southland A & P Show, with one breeder’s cattle available for entrants to show. Entrants will be taught the ropes from some of the committee’s experienced cattle showman.

Numbers were also looking strong in the sheep and equestrian sections. “One of the highlights of this is the PGG Wrightson Grand Champion Accumulator, which is presented to a hack and pony with the most points gained in the show ring from West Otago, Wyndham, Waiau, Winton, Gore and Southland A&P Shows.” There will also be the McMillan Feed/NRM 90cm Showjumping Horse Accumulator and the ILT/MLT 1.10m Horse Series Accumulator presented at the show.

Vintage and classic machinery will be on display, and will take part in the major spectacle for the day, the Grand Parade in the main ring at 2:45pm. There will also be Cowboy Challenge Competition, which starts at 8am.

Entries for the creative sections, including the biggest pumpkin, ugliest vegetable, baking a fruit cake and more, are still open, closing at 4:30pm on Friday, March 1.
Gates open for the Southland A&P Show at 9am. Tickets cost $10 per adult, $5 for senior citizens and children under 16 are free.
