More than 240 recipes from around the Southland community have been transformed into a cookbook, thanks to Waihopai Primary School.

Mum Latoya Treymane was part of the Friends of Waihopai group, that was fundraising for a new school playground.

"This book brings together the favourite dishes of families from Waihopai Primary, paired with their stories, memories, and traditions.

“It’s beautifully designed, amazingly photographed, and organised like a commercial cookbook you’d expect to see in bookstores.

“We’ve included not only everyday meals, but also recipes from Southland/NZ businesses and local legends who people recognise and love.”

Latoya said the community cookbook was also a piece of community history.

“By capturing these recipes and stories, we’re preserving our culture and identity in a way that future families will look back on with pride.”

She said the group had poured time, creativity, and heart into making the project professional and meaningful.

Latoya was involved with the photography and had the pleasure of tasting over 100 of the recipes in the book.

“I can assure you it’s packed with incredible, simple, everyday favourites using affordable ingredients and a beautiful mix of cultural influences.”

She said what they really tried to achieve in the cookbook was relatability.

“For example, one night you might be cooking pulled pork and serving it in delicious, fresh buns, and then the next night turning that same pork into pulled pork tacos, quesadillas, or even loaded fries. It’s about showing how real families cook, stretching meals, keeping things simple, and making them delicious every time.”
