A large truck and trailer unit rolled at Awarua earlier today, causing SH 1 to be closed. A detour route is in place.

Police had earlier issued an advisory for motorists to take extra care on the roads today due to the adverse weather.

Some Air New Zealand flights in and out of Invers have also been disrupted.

Fire Service crews have been busy attending weather related callouts across Southland.

At the time of writing PowerNet reported 9 outages across its network.

The MetService forecast is for the severe Sou’ west gales to 120kph and frequent showers to ease slightly this evening.

The Clinton – Mataura back road, SH93 is also closed due to a tree toppling and taking down power lines.
