In a significant boost to Southland’s community, environment, and economy, New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter Limited (NZAS) and Ngāi Tahu have announced the allocation of $1.15 million in funding. This support is part of a larger $2 million Community Development Fund, which was established after an agreement in October 2022 between Murihiku Rūnaka, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, NZAS, and Rio Tinto.

The fund, overseen by representatives from Rio Tinto, NZAS, and Murihiku Rūnaka, has selected seven exceptional projects in its first round of funding. These projects include a Flagship Project and five Community Activator Projects. Additionally, another Flagship Project has received conditional funding, pending further community support.

Key Projects and Their Impact:

  • Te Tapu o Tāne – Pikiraurahi: This project, based in Waituna, focuses on planting native species around new ponding areas, contributing to ecological health and cultural wellbeing. It represents a significant step in environmental restoration and supports local cultural practices.
  • Invercargill Community Connections Charitable Trust – Grace Street Project: This project aims to create community spaces for various activities, strengthening community ties and providing new learning opportunities.
  • Southland Warm Homes Trust: Their project aims to improve the living environments in Southland homes by providing cost-effective insulation and heating solutions, enhancing health and wellbeing in the community.
  • Community Foundations of New Zealand – Southland Foundation: This initiative will establish a community foundation in Southland, promoting local philanthropic efforts and community strengthening.

One of the flagship projects, Te Tapu o Tāne, will particularly benefit from the funding. It focuses on planting indigenous trees and plants, which aids in habitat restoration and supports climate change initiatives. This project also contributes to the cultural reconnection of Ngāi Tahu, offering opportunities for traditional practices and environmental stewardship.

Dean Whaanga, Chairperson of Te Rūnanga o Awarua, expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the project’s environmental and cultural significance. Jana Davis, CEO of Te Tapu o Tāne Ltd, highlighted the project’s aim to create a healthy ecosystem, providing habitats for various species and supporting local indigenous food gathering practices.

The Community Development Fund will remain available until the end of 2024, with the possibility of extension if the smelter’s long-term future is secured.
