Chris Hipkins is set to become the next Prime Minister of New Zealand after being the sole nominee for the Labour Party leadership. He has been a high-profile minister in the current Labour government, holding significant portfolios such as Education, Health, Covid-19 Response, and Police.

The Labour Party caucus will meet to endorse the nomination and confirm him as the party leader. The leadership ontest was prompted by the surprise resignation of current Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The nomination needed the support of at least 10 percent of the caucus, or seven MPs, in order to proceed. This is the first leadership vote of its kind for the Labour Party since 2017.
