The beloved Mataura River Festival, “On the Fly,” is back in Gore for its fourth year on February 25th. This event is a tribute to the renowned river, offering a day packed with activities like fly-fishing, a variety of food options, no-cost activities for kids, and live music. For the first time, attendees can enjoy the sale of alcohol, thanks to a special license obtained for the festival.
Jessica Swan, the Gore District Council’s Senior Events Coordinator, shared insights into the addition of alcohol sales. The event’s return to River Terrace provides ample space under the canopy of majestic trees, perfect for enjoying a drink on a sunny day. Local favorites Double Cone Brewery and the Hokonui Moonshine Trust will feature their craft beers, moonshine cocktails, and wines, bringing a new flavor to the festivities.
The festival will host fly-fishing demonstrations by experts Chris Dore and Mike Weddell, catering to all skill levels. A special group license for the day allows everyone to try fly-fishing, with no personal license required. Attendees can also participate in a casting competition with prizes from Category Three Fly Company, B&B Sports, and Kiwi Fly Fishing.
Children will be entertained with free face painting and mini jeeps, while live performances by Steven Hamlin and Kayla Wilcox create a lively atmosphere. Food trucks will be available to satisfy the appetites of festival-goers, and pets are invited to join in the fun.
The event is set to take place from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm at River Terrace, offering free entry to all who wish to celebrate the Mataura River in style.
