A serious two-vehicle crash has occurred near Invercargill, leaving one person trapped. The accident happened on Kennington Roslyn Bush Road in Southland at around 3.30pm today, involving a car and a truck.
Emergency services, including two crews from Kennington and Invercargill, were quick to respond to the scene. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ said that they were currently working on extricating one person.
State Highway 1 has been closed between Kennington Road and Longbush South Road, causing traffic delays in the area. A detour has been put in place, and motorists are being asked to follow the diversion and allow extra travel time.
For southbound traffic: the detour involves turning left onto Longbush South Road, then right onto Rimu Road, and left onto Kennington Road to exit onto Clapham Road and State Highway 1. Northbound traffic should turn left onto Clapham Road, then right onto Kennington Road, right onto Rimu Road, and finally left onto Longbush South Road.
Note: Highways South have advised that the road maybe closed till later this evening.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible and to drive with caution.
