I want you to be involved and excited about Invercargill.
My vision is a thriving city that exceeds your expectations.
A city where you are listened to, where your contribution is valued.
A city where stuff gets done through great leadership.
I get stuff done. That’s why I want to be the Mayor.
Invercargill is on the cusp of significant change and I’m the right person to lead us through.
I have a proven track record of leadership and getting things done through my many community involvements, as a Councillor, and as Deputy Mayor.
I will ensure that council is more transparent and accountable. We need to develop a community-driven vision for everyone in our city.
Invercargill belongs to all of us – let’s make our city the place we all want it to be.

Steve Chernishov

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the
Invercargill City Council area.
I am also standing for Councillor – At Large.
I am standing in this position to encourage you to be innovative, and develop ideas. You can make a difference – do what you believe in. Step up, be creative!
Some harsh critics will tell you that you are not qualified or successful enough, you do not have the required experience, or you don’t understand enough about how current systems work.
Others may say that you are not influential or wealthy enough, too young or too old – you are not what they expected.
They may question whether they should trust and believe in you.
I encourage you to go for the life you really want. Your creative ideas and heart’s desires are worthwhile!
My name is Steve Chernishov. I am a solutions focused believer in people; an optimist who sees ways forward. I am here to inspire our government to focus on empowering people’s growth. Join me!

Darren Ludlow

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I am also standing for Councillor – At Large.
To hold the Mayoralty for Invercargill would be a privilege and a responsibility. I offer a style of leadership that blends experience, inclusion, open mindedness, fairness and compassion. It is not about self. It is about service. The city needs leadership that is engaged with all the mayoral responsibilities, and provides advice and encouragement.
Leadership should help Council make tough decisions that have the best interests of the city at heart.
Sometimes decisions are not popular, but must be based on good information and discussion. The Mayor is a voice for Council and expresses and supports its decisions. That is democracy. I offer my experience, professionalism, dedication and networks, and do so with the full support of my family. I’d love the opportunity and I’d value your support.

Tim Shadbolt

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I’m proud to be serving as your Mayor.
We need to make Invercargill a City that is flourishing, attractive and truly family friendly.
Local government focuses on providing infrastructure but I believe I can add a sense of social responsibility, humour, excitement and energy to the role of Mayor.
The greatest challenges we face as a City are attracting people to live here, creating new jobs and addressing our housing crisis.
Council needs to play an active role in partnership with private enterprise.
I am a political veteran. I am prepared to fight on a national stage to protect the lifeblood of our City- S.I.T and it’s loss of autonomy, the fight for better health services and the struggle to ensure fair transmission costs for Tiwai.
I have the dedicated and tested experience to lead our City at a time of transition as we watch an exciting new CBD grow.

Supports the CBD development Continue asking tough questions, scrutinise answers in your interests without fear bias or compromise. Comments thoughts ideas welcome.

Becs Amundsen

Candidate Profile Statement:

Proven. Dedicated. Real.
My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area. I am also standing for Mayor.
My vision for Invercargill is a thriving city that exceeds your expectations.
Serving on the city council for the past six years has been a privilege.
I want to continue to serve you – and that’s why I’m asking for your support as a councillor, and in my bid to become Mayor in 2019. Remember you can vote for me for both positions.
If re-elected, I will continue to work towards making Invercargill a city where you are listened to, and where your contribution is valued.
This is what I have been working towards as an individual, as a Councillor, and as Deputy Mayor.
I get stuff done. I believe we need to develop a community-driven vision for everyone in our city.
Invercargill belongs to all of us – let’s make our city the place we all want it to be.

Allan Arnold

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I’m asking for your support for re-election because I bring common sense, logic and a principled approach to the council table.
My vision for Invercargill is a great place to live with a vibrant inner city, and plenty of opportunities for people to work, study and enjoy our fantastic lifestyle.
I have worked hard to achieve positive outcomes for Invercargill residents. I will keep pushing for a more effective, efficient and caring council that works for you. My business and public service experience helps me bring a balanced view to decision-making, and as my record shows, I’m not afraid to stand up for what I believe in.
I’m proud of helping push for an end to councillor directorships and will continue to ask hard questions and ensure your ratepayer dollars are spent wisely for the benefit of the many – not the few.

Toni Biddle

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I continue to have a vision for Invercargill to progress so our future will leave no generations forgotten, no communities vulnerable, and inspire pride in our home.
I want to make sure our children and mokopuna live and grow in a safe, vibrant and contemporary city which embraces diversity. To make promises would be wrong as just one of twelve people, but I have demonstrated I am a servant of our people, I am transparent, have the courage to ask powerful questions and have stood strong in the face of adversity. We still have a lot of work to do and I would ask you to allow me to continue my service to you and our city.
He aha te mea nui o te ao. He tängata, he tängata, he tängata.
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

Thelma Buck

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Why should you vote for me?
I would work 100% for the ratepayers – voters.
We are a city of aging population. We need some of our framework back i.e. museum, recycling to name a few.
This year, too many houses were up for rating sales. There must be someone who can help these people.
Our rates must be affordable. (But are they?)
Can be contacted by phone at all times. I’m always ready to help. Make your vote count.

Steve Chernishov

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area. I am also standing for Mayor.
Areas of focus: Community Education, Housing & Infrastructure, Waste Management, Events & Attractions.
I like to observe what is going on under the surface, and find alternative ways to manage resources. I like to open doors for people, and show them new paths to walk.
I believe that we need to transform the South, so it has more freedom. For many, it feels impossible to establish a worthwhile, meaningful lifestyle; where they belong and do well.
It is like there are closed gates holding people back, which don’t need to be there.
I see Southlanders accessing new opportunities, which can be reached when we re-evaluate local government priorities, and re-allocate funding to strengthening us.
We will grow innovative new ideas, and encourage existing industries to offer different kinds of services.
I want to make Southland more exciting for locals and visitors, and see our people building their dreams.

Barry Chilton

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I care for the city’s youth, the elderly and those in between who are the ratepayers that need protection.
My wife and I have two sons aged 6 and 15 years.
Older folk remember that I set up the Strathern Inn in South City and more recently my ownership of The Cabbage Tree Restaurant, sold a year ago.
Attention to detail and peoples needs made those businesses successful. I can now devote my time solely to Council business.
I am practical, unafraid to ask hard questions of Council staff, central government officers and those promoting new expenditure.
The CBD upgrade must be monitored and brought in on budget. I support S.I.T. in its fight to protect its benefits to the city, retaining jobs for disabled, extending Council pensioner housing, freeing up housing land, making building requirements simpler and less costly for home builders.

Nobby Clark

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Nobby Clark A voice for ratepayers for the last 3 years, I’ve been the organiser and spokesperson for our Invercargill Ratepayers Advocacy Group.
We have raised with Councillors many issues that affect ratepayers and are regularly ignored.
I’ve attended nearly all the Full Council meetings so have a reasonable grasp of how things are not working well.
I believe it is time to get a transparent ratepayer voice at the council table.
There is too much financial mismanagement in our council and it is time to have a fresh approach, that is not based on ever increasing rates.
I’ve spent half a life time in the management of social services agencies.
This gives me significant experience in financial management, accountability and achieving results.
I am a good debater and known for being able to ask the tough questions.

Jay Coote

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
To represent the people of Invercargill and Bluff as a Councillor would be a privilege but also a responsibility.
Everyone deserves to live in a healthy and thriving community and as an Invercargill City Councillor this is the best platform to ensure this is achieved. Most of my life I have worked alongside people, volunteer groups, sporting teams and local organisations in the region to strengthen the well-being of the community.
I am a husband and father to a young family, and this drives my passion to make Invercargill and Bluff the best places for whänau and visitors to be in. Now is the perfect time for your Council to have leaders who will increase the awareness of our assets and use them collaboratively and effectively to take our region into the future.

Waka Coughlan

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I was born in Mosgiel and lived there 14 years, then Christchurch for 17 years. I have now resided in this beautiful city of Invercargill, which I consider home, for 23 years and married to a local lady, Karen and have 3 daughters.
I work as a milk tanker driver at Southern Milk Transport based at Open Country Dairy.
I have done 10 years roading construction with Fulton Hogan Southland and have worked in building consents in both CCC and ICC, plus I also worked as a parking warden at ICC and have experience in working closely with the public and dealing with problems on the spot.
I believe the city needs improvement in vibrancy and roading and I will bring a vision and an open willingness to discuss these.
I believe in this city and will work with the people, for the people. I will make your vote count.

Alex Crackett

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Energetic, excited and completely dedicated to driving Invercargill forward, I would be honoured to be re-elected and continue to work tirelessly for the future of Invercargill.
Armed with strength of character, youthful perspective and personal integrity, I will continue to employ fiscally responsible leadership and strive to ensure the interests of ratepayers and residents always come first.
I have learned a great deal over the past three years and will continue to serve and remain steadfast in attendance and commitment.
Prior to becoming a Councillor, I pledged action toward urban rejuvenation, innovation, community engagement and delivering our core services better. We have made great progress but there is much that remains.
Moving forward, we need improved transparency, a synergistic focus on attracting people, and to ensure we deliver planned infrastructure projects; Museum, Anderson House and Arts Centre Invercargill.
With experience, energy and courage I stand for the future of Invercargill.

Ian Edwards

Ian Edwards – Profile

Kari Graber

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I would like to represent my community to help ensure the changes happening in our city are done to build a place where we want to live, now and in the future. A place where small businesses thrive and big businesses want to be established.
Invercargill is changing and we have the opportunity to build a city that is for us, our weather and our needs, now and in 60 years.
I would like the opportunity to help assist the Council embrace its amazing assets and invest in the infrastructure to keep them vibrant. These include; the Water Tower, the City Centre, Anderson House and our beloved Museum.
We need to be able to work together to achieve good things for Invercargill.
I believe I have the commitment and experience to achieve positive results. Let’s have real conversations,

Wayne Harpur

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I am Wayne Harpur. For the last few years I have focused on my family and business, now it is time to rebalance and come back to the council table.
Council spends your money. These choices should be based on quality decision making and financial prudence – as a business owner, these are qualities I will bring to the council table.
Council needs strategic thinkers with political and policy acumen. My experience at the board tables of SIT, Community Trust of Southland, Venture Southland and the council is evidence I have these skills.
Council needs leadership. My experience Chairing the Community Trust of Southland and Venture Southland are skills I will bring to the Council table.
With your support I will be working for all Invercargill ratepayers to make sure they are getting the best deal from their council.

Carol Jasperse (CJ)

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Southland is a rich province, but people living in Invercargill receive low wages. Council needs to take this into account when they set budgets.
Council’s core roles are to see our assets looked after in a timely and appropriate manner. If elected I will work to see roadsides and centre plots are presentable at our town entrances and beyond, acceptance of the tiny home concept, setting up of emergency housing pods, some long-term plan changes, a robust Council complaints process, more family friendly green spaces within the town centre, reopening of the Pyramid on Gala, Andersons Park building and the water tower, it can be done!
Past experience has been with Southland Water Ski and Runabout Club secretary, Southland Museum Club market secretary amongst other roles.

Peter Warren Kett

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Company Director. Board Member Age Concern Southland. Life Member & Vice President Invercargill Harness Racing Club.
After narrowly missing out on council three years ago I believed our city was in good hands with a mix of old and new councillors – however we have had a secret, booze fuelled, meeting to sack our Deputy Mayor without his knowledge, a blowout of $2.75 million at Don St, the Museum closure plus the very, very poorly handled recycling contract putting unnecessary stress on our 82 special people and their families.
Seven councillors publicly rubbished Sir Tim – it’s obvious some have no respect for each other or those who voted them into office. They should be focusing on core services only.
Change has to happen. I have the experience and know how our city should be operated.

Graham Lewis

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Sitting councillor standing again ready to devote many more hours to Invercargill and Bluff.
Graham Lewis registered Pharmacist recently retired from Baillie & Lewis.
New Zealand Institute of Directors member.
Deputy chair Finance & Policy committee, sit on Community Services, Chief Executive Appraisal, Creative Community and Events committees, trustee Invercargill Charitable trust. Council representative for the Stadium.
Community activities include Trustee Hospice Southland, involvement since Hospice started, Bluff 2024 member, previous interest in South Alive, Grey Power member.
Decisions of Council often have financial or social implications but I think my record shows a responsible outlook.
Working in Pharmacy I get to see the real side of life and can equate to many aspects and general demands of life. I listen to
reason, acting accordingly.

Darren Ludlow

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area. I am also standing for Mayor.
I’ve served six terms as a Councillor and enjoy taking onboard different perspectives, and ideas or trying to resolve issues and help those who ask for it.
I ensure people enjoy a fair process and are heard, particularly through the many Hearings I’ve chaired. The role is not without its challenges. If we don’t get it right, we should always learn and make improvements.
I’m a husband and father – family always sits at the heart of why I serve. We want a great city for our children to grow and families to flourish, which includes making sure we have good job opportunities and necessary support services. That is what I fight for.
I’m seeking the Mayoralty and want to take my leadership skills to that next level.
If that is not to be, I still want to be your voice in our city.

Alton McDonald

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
A vote for Alton McDonald is a vote for community consultation on the structure of the ILT and its monopoly.
I’m 46 years old. I’m a born and bred Southlander. Like most people in Invercargill I live within a licensing regime that I have never once had a chance to vote on. I am a single-issue candidate.
Only vote for me if you, as resident of a wider Invercargill district, think it’s time to debate and have a say on Invercargill’s licensing law that affects so many aspects of our city. If I’m successful it will send a clear message that the community wants this issue on the table. I’ve put my hand up – now it’s over to you.

Shane Pleasance

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Vote with your Heart & your Head. Shane Pleasance Competence and Compassion
Are you sick of the awful decisions made by Invercargill City Councillors?
Now you can vote with your heart & your head.
Heart: Therapist, Registered Nurse, Grandfather and Volunteer.
Head: MBA, Director, Leader and Businessman.
He has already done more for Invercargill than most councillors – without costing ratepayers a cent!

Ian Pottinger

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I am a local business owner and a current City Councillor.
I am not afraid to stand up and speak for what I believe in and what is right for the future of Invercargill.
My dedication has resulted in me gaining the majority of Council to abolish City Councillors holding directorships on Council owned companies.
This will create a strong positive change in Council culture allowing Councillors to focus on the core Council duties that they were elected for.
There are major project decisions ahead of Council. Community engagement plays a valuable role with this along with an understanding of Council’s budgets that allow growth and still retain rates affordability.
Council must be awake to community issues and not let bad process prevent us all from finding the real solutions that are needed.
Councillors are elected by the people, for the people.

John Rikkerink

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I have lived in this great city since 1973. I regard myself a local but not typically local.
I have lived a colourful and chequered past, lived many life experiences including long periods of unemployment, mental health struggles. I am a survivor.
My reasons for standing for Council I will express more comprehensively on billboards around town to save words here.
Potential voters, or otherwise, wanting to know what I hope achievable if elected, can read these billboards.
Instance, I feel very inadequately represented by present past councils. Therefore I would stand against almost all big ticket items (except infrastructure), not a priority.
For many ratepayers, renters, a roof over our head is the utmost importance. Including latest planned buildings, no more new buildings over four stories high to be allowed for public safety.
Makes no sense, dangerous, too many empty spaces now, we can go out not up.

Nigel Skelt

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Invercargill has always been home and I’m extremely passionate about the city, the community and, in particular, its people and what the future holds.
The inner-city redevelopment, the Langland’s hotel and direct flights to Auckland all provide fantastic opportunities to develop a unique living space in Invercargill.
We must retain our young people by providing job opportunities and creating events and leisure pursuits which add a significant point of difference.
Our community is our biggest, most influential resource. By listening and being solution driven while making informed decisions we can continue to transform our city into a vibrant hub.
I will bring business acumen, courage, loyalty and teamwork to the council table, along with international experience gained as both a former NZ sporting representative and Badminton World
Federation council member for the past 12 years.
My focus is to champion the right change whilst maintaining the integrity of our city.

Lesley Soper

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I am also standing for Southern District Health Board.
Invercargill is my Turangawaewae; my heartland.
In standing for a second Council term I want to continue contributing to significant change at local level, ensuring solid foundations for a vibrant, exciting city future. In particular I want to see Invercargill’s core infrastructure (roads, water, housing, libraries, parks, pools) strengthened and future-proofed.
Council has recently taken one of the most significant transformational decisions of the decade by deciding to invest in inner city development & restarting the city centre heart.
I’m keen to see this project through, as well as rebuild our museum and art gallery; preserve unique heritage; and work with the rest of the region on attracting industry, opportunity and innovation.
I am a team player. Having unique experience to bring from former parliamentary and governance roles, I also offer experience, commonsense, legal knowledge, accountability, financial nous, and a commitment to effective communication and consultation with the public.

Barry R. Stewart

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
I am a born and bred Southlander, born in Wyndham to Noel and Kitty Stewart, 63 years ago.
My partner Judy and I have run a very successful Gas Fitting and Plumbing business for the last 12 years.
I have served as an executive member of the general committee of the Invercargill Working Men’s Club in Invercargill for the past nine and a half years.
I consider myself to be a very competent person to do a good job as your representative on the Invercargill City Council and feel it is an appropriate time for a tradesman to have a say on the running of our city’s affairs.

Russell (aka Judge) Tempero

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
My name is Russell Tempero aged 50 something living in Invercargill.
The nickname Judge stuck when I was employed by the Justice Dept.
I am employed as a manager in hospitality industry.
My 3 children have enjoyed the community and sporting opportunities Invercargill offers and it is important that these opportunities continue .
I have served on many school and sporting committees and boards during this time.
I am passionate to make Invercargill a better place for us all. The Museum, Water Tower, and Rugby Park appear to have been lost or being lost to our city and we need these facilities to attract visitors.
While we talk about keeping our city vibrant I am focused on our own residents and ensure we all receive the basic living needs.
A common sense approach will keep this city moving and a great place as it is to live.

Lindsay Thomas

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Infrastructure is the key to running any city which means having quality drinking water, a sound pipe network system for stormwater and sewage and a road network.
This city has all of this with a sound asset management plan for continued renewals, the citizens of Invercargill can be confident council has delivered.
As with all pipework and roading there will be some short term pain but once completed, the assets longevity is assured.
Now like the S.I.T our water assets are a risk of a government takeover. Some council’s have not invested in infrastructure and the Government’s Fresh Water Plan poses serious risk to our water and piping assets.
As the current Chair of Infrastructure we have fought hard to save assets.
If re-elected we must continue to fight for what is ours as other councils infrastructure problems are not ours. Vote for Lindsay Thomas, committed to maintaining this city.

Juliana Thomson

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
My name is Juliana Thomson. I am a part owner of a hairdressing salon in South City, Invercargill.
Standing for Invercargill City Council was an easy decision because I am concerned about the number of people having difficulty paying their rates and also the lack of available housing for those who need rental accommodation.
I have concerns about the museum, the inner city development, and keeping jobs in Invercargill that belong in Invercargill.
The overall concern is just how ratepayers money is being spent.
I would like to think that there are other potential councillors out there who also have genuine concerns about these matters.
Invercargill is a great place to live but we need to understand that there are many people who are struggling and council needs councillors who are aware of the problems. If I am appointed a city councillor, I intend to be available at all times.

Miriama Uamaki

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Invercargill City Council area.
Over 36 years, I consider myself lucky to have worked alongside a diverse range of people in farming, woolsheds, freezing works, schooling and latterly obtaining my degree in education locally.
I have 3 children who join a generation that deserve to prosper from the fruits of the place we call home. It is for the betterment of our community that drives my motivation to stand in this rohe. I have a deep passion and commitment for cultural diversity and well being of all. I come with fresh innovative ideas and a whole lot of Deep South experience.
I am committed to the physical construction of Invercargill and to the success of our future generations in a city that we are proud of.
I stand to be a collective voice for us all.
He aha te mea nui O te Ao He tängata, he tängata, he tängata.

Ray Fife

Candidate Profile Statement:

My principal place of residence is in the Bluff Community Board area.
I have been privileged to serve two terms on the Bluff Community Board.
It is rewarding to represent the interests of the community and have an understanding of what’s involved in being an elected representative.
I believe that Bluff has an incredibly proud history and we are at our best when we face our challenges with a positive outlook.
Our community is a great place to live, work and play but there is always room for improvement. There are a number of issues that still need to be addressed. These issues are important to the community where I will continue to pursue an outcome.
I have worked hard to show how community engagement can benefit everyone and I will work towards ensuring the needs of the wider community are always to the forefront.
I want to raise our community to its full potential

Gloria Violet Henderson

Greetings Bluff residents, please consider electing me to the Bluff Community Board to represent your views and wishes.
I moved to Bluff from Tauranga in June 2017 after deciding Bluff was one of the best places in New Zealand to live, so now a permanent resident. After working in the community support sector for over 30 years I find working for my community interesting, also have the time and ability to represent you well.
Having had experience over many years working with Community Organisations and both Local and Central Government I would bring a good balanced understanding of what is needed to meet everyone’s expectations.
As an innovative thinker I have lots of new ideas which could be adopted if the Bluff community wishes to do so. My longterm vision for Bluff is an eco-friendly seaside village, and continue to make Bluff a great place to live and visit.
