New Zealand is currently experiencing a cold west to southwest flow, causing strong winds to sweep across many areas of the country. The weather conditions have prompted the issuance of Strong Wind Warnings and Watches, which remain in effect for several regions. Residents are being advised to stay up-to-date with the latest forecasts as changes may occur.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Clutha, Dunedin, and North Otago. The warning period spans 24 hours, from 9 a.m. Tuesday, 4 July, to 9 a.m. Wednesday, 5 July.
The forecast predicts severe gale west to southwesterlies gusting up to 120 km/h in exposed places. These powerful winds could potentially cause significant damage.
Residents in these areas are warned that strong wind gusts could wreak havoc on trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures. Driving conditions may also become hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. While the winds are expected to ease slightly later on Tuesday, they are forecasted to intensify again Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday.
In addition to the warning, a Strong Wind Watch has been put into place for Southland southeast of Riversdale, including Stewart Island. This watch will be in effect for a shorter period of 4 hours, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 4 July. During this time, west to southwest winds may approach severe gale force in exposed places.
Given these conditions, residents in the affected areas are urged to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to safeguard their property. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
