Bluff Hill is set to become a hotspot for adventure enthusiasts as construction begins on its latest attraction, the Bluff Hill Active Recreation Precinct. This expansive project will feature over 10km of mountain bike and walking trails catering to various skill levels. In addition to the creation of new paths, existing trails will also undergo enhancements.
Caroline Rain, Council Manager of Parks and Recreation, expressed her excitement about the project’s initiation. She mentioned, “After detailed planning, it’s exhilarating to see the project take off. The moment to finally break ground is here.”
Rain emphasized the significance of this project for the Bluff Tourism Master Plan by Great South. She believes that upon completion, it will significantly boost cycling tourism in Southland. The precinct is designed to be inclusive, catering to a diverse range of visitors. Rain added, “The trails are multi-purpose, ensuring everyone, regardless of their ability, can enjoy them. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or pushing a stroller, there’s something for everyone. Additionally, the tracks are disability-friendly, and we’re ensuring ample parking and accessible pathways for all.”
Dirt Dynamics, a renowned mountain bike trail construction company based in Wānaka, has been entrusted with the design and construction of the trails. They will also oversee the development of the car park, installation of toilets, and a bike wash-down area. The entire precinct is slated for completion by July 2024.
The project has garnered substantial financial support, with a grant of $981,380 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, complemented by an additional $547,000 from the Long-term Plan. Rain expressed her gratitude towards the Bluff Hill Environment Trust, the Department of Conservation, and other key partners for their unwavering support. She said, “Their collaboration has been invaluable from the project’s inception. The transformation of this area into a vibrant activity center for everyone to relish is eagerly anticipated.”
The construction strategy involves starting at the hill’s peak and progressively working downwards, with the aim of inaugurating the precinct in July 2024.
