Southland artists and groups are being encouraged to apply for funding through the Creative Communities Scheme – but applications need to be in by September 30.

Southland concerts, festivals, plays, exhibitions and workshops have all benefited from the Creative Communities scheme in the past.

Southland District Creative Communities Committee chair, Southland District councillor Julie Keast, said the scheme was a great opportunity for artists and groups to apply for a grant to assist them in their artistic endeavours.

The fund supports local communities to engage with art by encouraging local performances and exhibitions, along with providing funding to allow people to participate in art of all forms – from performing arts such as choirs, dance and theatre, to weaving, carving, writing and print-making.

Applications are administered by a committee of Southland arts practitioners who get together twice a year to consider applications. The current round closes on September 30. Another funding round is held in March each year.

There are some guidelines and criteria that must be met; the project must either encourage participation, support diversity or enable young people and benefit the District.

“I encourage anyone who has an idea to share their artistic flair or passion with others, or who wants to learn more about a particular form of art by arranging a tutor for lessons for their community, to apply,” Cr Keast said.

Hopeful applicants can contact either Angela Newell or Bronwyn Affleck at Venture Southland to discuss access to the fund.

Each year Creative New Zealand provides funding to city and district councils for distribution in their area. The scheme supports more than 1,800 projects nationwide every year.
