“This funding will assist farmers and rural communities in our region, through organisations such as the Southland Rural Support Trust. It follows the $250,000 announced in June for rural support trusts nationwide,” Simmonds said.
“I believe it’s significant that the Government has acknowledged the tough circumstances local farmers are experiencing and is providing help. For many, it’s not just about the money but the recognition of the challenges faced.”
Simmonds highlighted that her office has been actively supporting local farmers dealing with the recent extreme weather conditions, noting that last month was the wettest September on record since the 1970s.
“The constant rain has affected the morale of farmers and their families, especially during calving and lambing season, which is already a demanding time,” she said.
“Having lived on a Southland farm myself, I understand how disheartening it can be to navigate such difficult conditions. I encourage farmers to seek the support available, stay connected, and maintain hope for better days ahead.”
Simmonds added that the situation would be monitored closely, with further support to be considered once the full extent of the damage from the current weather events is known.
