The deadline for nominations in the imminent Invercargill City Council by-election has drawn to a close, revealing a total of 14 contenders.
The by-election’s nomination phase was initiated on May 11, in the wake of former councilor Nigel Skelt’s resignation, which also occurred in May.
Michael Morris, the Council Deputy Electoral Officer and Manager Governance and Legal, expressed his satisfaction with the robust list of nominees.
“During our most recent by-election in 2021, we had nine nominees, so it’s really uplifting to see a surge in the number of passionate individuals willing to advocate for their community,” he expressed.
Morris also noted his enthusiasm and contentment regarding the broad range of candidates. “The variety is impressive and it is heartening for the community to witness so many people of such different backgrounds willing to serve, clearly indicating their concern for the Council and its work.”
Voting papers are scheduled to be dispatched from July 13, and Morris urged residents to ensure they were listed on the electoral roll. He emphasized that people who had recently moved should update their details.
Postal voting will be the mode of casting votes. Voters also have the option to hand in their voting papers at the Invercargill City Council Civic Building at 101 Esk Street, the Invercargill Public Library, and the Bluff Service Centre. The council is also arranging for additional drop-off sites for voting papers, the details of which will be disclosed in due time, added Mr. Morris. Related: Interesting Mix In Council By-Election
