Police need motorists in the wider Invercargill & Southland area to take it slow and be aware there may be ice on the roads this morning.

Police are currently at the scene of a crash involving five cars on North Road, Lorneville.

It appears the vehicles, including trucks and cars, have hit ice and skidded off the road near the bridge around 6:50am this morning.

Luckily nobody has been injured, but this incident indicates how dangerous the road conditions in the area could be on this cold morning.

The cold snap is making driving across parts of the Southern Policing District dangerous this morning and Police want motorists to plan ahead and drive carefully.

Ice is causing issues for many drivers, particularly in the Invercargill area and on the Clinton Highway between Gore and Balclutha.

As well as this, there are snow warnings in place on State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Palmerston.

As you jump in the car today, we ask that you think before you drive.

Remember to slow down, approach shady parts of the road with extra caution, increase your following distances and adjust to the conditions.
