Tour of Southland 70’s spin
Rolling back to the 1970’s, we take a look at some newspaper articles and feature photos covering the Tour of Southland. During this era the event had been branded the Rothmans Tour of Southland and helmets certainly weren’t considered necessary- It could be fair to say things have evolved greatly in the way of health and safety. This event is now called the SBS Tour of Southland and it would certainly be fair to say the tour has gone from strength to strength captivating Invercargill through the decades to the present day.
Featured in the photo below is Trever Mcleay, a local who started the tour off in the yellow jersey.
