Southland v Otago
Southland’s representative golf teams did not have a good weekend, with the senior women’s, senior men’s, men’s masters and male junior teams all competing against their Otago counterparts at St Clair in their opening hit out of the representative season.
Southland’s women’s team lost the Salisbury Cup to Otago, going down 13 ½ – 2 ½. In the morning’s single round Helen Baird and Kate McGregor both squared their matches for Southland and Tuani Marshall got a 2/1 win. That gave Otago a 6-2 lead going into the afternoon round of reverse singles. However only Bronwyn O’Brien could manage a halved match in the afternoon, giving Otago a 7 ½ – ½ afternoon win and handing them the Salisbury Cup.
The senior men’s team lost 21 ½ – 3 ½ (Tyler McLean had a win and a half and Liam Balneaves and Daniel O’Connor had one win each) and the men’s masters lost 12-8, with Peter Buckley getting three wins. The junior men’s team won 6-3 (boosted by the presence of a couple of Queenstown players due to unavailability of some of Southland’s juniors). Matthew McLelland, in his first game for Southland, got two wins and a half.
No doubt there will be plenty of learnings from the weekend’s play.
