“The freight train derailment on 11 January at Wrights Bush damaged around 100m of track and also caused some damage to the rolling stock.
“We reopened the line on Friday afternoon, two days earlier than anticipated.
“The cause of the derailment is still being investigated.
“The derailment occurred on the Ohai to Invercargill branch line which is used exclusively to transport coal for Bathurst Resources.
“In December 2020 an agreement was reached between KiwiRail and Bathurst which has secured the medium-term future of the line.
“Bathurst’s network contribution will cover the line renewal costs, which will allow us to continue operating the line into 2025 a KiwiRail Spokesperson said.
“We expect to begin work to upgrade the line shortly.”
