New Fowler Homes Southland franchisee owners Heather Scott-Smith and Cameron Lang are a unique team bringing 20 years combined building experience to the business.

Their new show home at 33 Scully Place was officially opened on Wednesday April 24, and also doubles as their team office.

Scully Place is officially recognised as a ‘Poppy Place,’ which is timely as we lead up to Anzac Day on Thursday. Related: Peter Scully Remembered with Poppy Places Sign in South Invercargill

The couple moved to Invercargill in January and hope to inspire and spark new ideas they have picked up in their building journey, to improve new projects around the community.

The show home was designed with growing trends in mind and using quality materials, and as new franchise owners they have come in already having built strong relationships in the community.

Cameron was born and raised in Southland, on the family sheep farm in Woodlands, and got into building straight out of school after leaving James Hargest College.

Heather’s journey into building started after the Canterbury earthquakes when she decided to leave her job as a swim instructor and look at how she could give back to the community.

It was 2010 and there were thousands of labourer jobs available in Christchurch – and despite many setbacks and sexist comments, she managed to finally get her foot in the door.

“I have persevered through a lot of discrimination to now be a qualified builder, built my own home and now I’m running a franchise. I hope to inspire other women to trail blaze and get amongst it no matter what your dreams,” she said.

The couple work well together and have strengths in different areas – both are very much still on the tools and hands on as they work alongside the team of local tradespeople to complete the final houses in the subdivision.

Bringing fresh new ideas, a young set of eyes and keeping up with trends, the pair collectively know what direction their client’s build should go.

“We want to provide what the community wants, whether that’s house and land packages or designer builds, we are accommodating to the needs of the local housing market.”
