• New ticketless system utilises cutting-edge Number Plate Recognition technology, similar to Invercargill Central car park.

  • Annual reduction of 112,000 tickets aids airport’s sustainability efforts.

Invercargill Airport has revolutionised its car parking facilities with the introduction of a new ticketless system, streamlining the process for drivers and contributing to environmental sustainability. Using the latest Number Plate Recognition technology, the system automatically identifies vehicle plates as they approach, lifting the barriers without the need for a physical ticket, similar to Invercargill Central car park.

Upon exiting, drivers can conveniently pay their parking fees via a QR code available throughout the terminal and parking areas or use EFTPOS and credit card options directly at the exit. This seamless method ensures the barriers open automatically post-payment, significantly reducing the time and hassle traditionally associated with manual ticket handling.

This modernisation is part of the airport’s broader sustainability initiative, eliminating the need to print around 112,000 parking tickets each year, thereby reducing waste and operational overhead. The upgrade also includes an extension of the free parking period from 20 to 30 minutes, offering additional convenience for those dropping off or picking up travelers.

Stuart Harris, the Chief Executive of Invercargill Airport, emphasised the improvements brought by the new system. “Ticketless parking is an essential element of our ongoing operational improvement programme,” said Harris. “Lost or wet tickets will be a thing of the past, and as a result, we’re delighted to announce that there will be no more lost ticket fees.”

He further commented on the simplicity and user-friendly nature of the system, “If paying by QR code, the only thing carpark users need to remember is their number plate to pay, and the rest is easy. Drivers will no longer have to lower their window and extend an arm in the pouring rain to collect or insert a ticket which can be damaged in the process. It’s a win-win.”

The system is currently being rolled out and is expected to be fully operational by Thursday morning. For those unfamiliar with the new setup, Carparking Superstars will be available in the parking lot and terminal to provide assistance, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.
