National Teams event
The Waikaia team of Dianne Cleland, Kate Cross, Janis Steel and Deryn Cullen have won the 2020 Golf Southland Women’s National Teams event. Waikaia comfortably topped the leaderboard with 128, over runners-up Tuatapere who finished with 140 and Greenacres, who finished third, on 143.
Fourteen clubs contested the tournament.
Traditionally, districts throughout New Zealand hold their own national teams tournaments and regional scores are submitted to New Zealand Golf to determine national placings. However, with 10 district associations forced to cancel their district competitions as they were scheduled prior to 5 May, NZ Golf decided to cancel the competition this year. With interest still high from Southland teams, Golf Southland decided to continue with its tournament, but there will be no national placings.
Southland trio wins Cromwell Tournament
A trio of Southlanders has won the Cromwell Winter Tournament, played late last week. Mataura golfers Melanie Borthwick and Nicki Clark teamed up with Waikaia’s Michelle Taylor to take the title.
