Friday Flashback – 1990’s Upgrade Plans

Invercargill City Council’s latest consultant’s First Retail have suggested that the 1990’s plans of making Esk & Don streets one way were mistakes and killed our city centre.

Today we take a look back at some of the designs produced by the then 1990’s consultants, that never quite got across the line.

The Esk Street Mall that never was. An idea originally proposed by Tim Shadbolt but later scrapped by Mayor David Harrington after Mayor Tim lost the election in 1995.
Fortunately Harrington only lasted one term as mayor and Tim Shadbolt was elected as our mayor again in 1998 but we still never got our Mall.

Plans for Tay Street as part of the inner city upgrade, center plots are removed.

Plans for Dee Street this is close to what we have now.

Proposed plans for Don Street as part of the city upgrade.
Would like to know how cars would have driven around this thing. Kinda a good thing they decided to put an umbrella there instead.
